Evolution Of Sweets; From Honey And Honeycombs To Modern Sugar Confectionary

Sugar wasn’t readily available in the world till the 16th century and sweets were made from honey. It wasn’t until the table sugar was manufactured on such a widespread commercial scale that modern sweets become common. Cane sugar after going through a refining process turns into the granular familiar form we all see in our houses. Processed sugar makes it easy to experiment with the form and flavors of the sweets and it keeps it preserved for a relatively long time.

A brief history of sweets:

When commercial manufacturing of processed sugar started, it wasn’t available for all. It was considered a luxury item and only the rich and affluent could afford it in turn Sweets and candy were considered a luxury too and were not accessible to the masses till the 18th century. Sweets and candy became a global hit after the industrial revolution of the 19th century as increased mechanization caused production to increase and in turn, prices dropped making sugar readily available to the public.

Evolution of sugary treats:

It’s fascinating how the definition of sweets changes from honey, and honeycombs to modern-day delectable chocolates, taffy, and chews. Humans are hardwired to always have room for sweets and desserts and that is why we all deserve to have free sweets. The person I’m voting for in the next election should have FREE SWEETS FOR EVERYONE’s agenda in his/her campaign or else I’m not voting. Humor aside I consider myself lucky that I’m born in an era where I can eat sweets whenever I’m having a bad day. Sweets are an important part of our life now, can you imagine not having a Snickers bar available after your boss yells at you? Sweets make emotional eating an absolute delight.

Sugar Confectionary:

When talking about sweets and candy it’s impossible to ignore sugar confectionary. It is the art of turning regular sugar into diverse and exotic sweets. It is one of the most underrated art forms, watching sugar confectionary videos on Instagram at 3 am is my guilty pleasure (and of many others I’m sure). Watching someone turn a blob of sugar into fancy sweets with aesthetic accessories and sweet boxes is enchanting.

Sugar candies:

Sugar candy or hard candy is probably the first thing that comes to our mind when we hear the word sweet or candy. The basic composition of sugar candy is boiled sugar syrup; different flavors are added to make them more enjoyable.

Candied fruits and nuts:

Candied fruits and nuts are an ancient form of candy that is still a big part of sweet and candy culture in humans. Ancient Egyptians used to mix nuts with honey to make resin-like sweets. In the modern era, the basic concept of candied fruits and nuts is still the same but the methods for preservation have evolved largely. Dates, cherries, apples, strawberries, and nuts are the most common types of this confectionery.

Chocolate:

Chocolate is sometimes classified as it’s own separate confectionary but American candy mostly consists of chocolate bars so here we are considering it a sub-branch for sweets and candy. It is the most loved candy globally. Almost 82% of adults and 100% of kids (I’m just assuming this one) love chocolate.

Toffee and chews:

Toffee, chews, another classic sweet treat that is especially popular around Halloween. Caramelized toffee is also used in different desserts such as ice creams and cakes.

Chewing gum:

Chewing gum also falls under the label of candy and sweets and it comes in a wide variety of flavors.

Sweetshops or Candy stores:

A sweetshop/candy store is an important part of English as well as American culture. A store dedicated entirely to exotic sweets. These stores are sweet heavens (literally) for kids but adults can enjoy there too.

Assortment sweet boxes:

Just like flowers, sweet/candy assortment has evolved into an art and people make money out of arranging sweets and candy in attractive sweet boxes for different occasions. A candy assortment box is perfect for every occasion; it won’t be an exaggeration if we call it a vital part of every surprise. Without candy, any surprise is like Rupaul without his huge blonde wig; acceptable but incomplete.

Sweet Boxes are like building blocks to enhance the retail value of any candy. If we evaluate our favorite childhood sweets, one of the factors why we loved that treat so much would be its packaging. The name, color combinations, graphics, all of these things had a role in making that particular sweet your favorite. Packaging compliments, the candy/sweet and instantly increases its retail value in the eyes of the customer by 3x.

The Custom Packaging makes the most alluring sweet boxes for all types of sweets and candy. These boxes are very chic yet affordable and they process the order in the minimum turnaround time.
